Busy Body (22 months)

We try to get out a lot and do fun things: storytimes, swimming, gymnastics, playdates, park, play outside. He has so much energy that is cannot be contained inside the house all day we have to get out and do something.

It's so great to stop and notice the small things that interest him and see the world through his eyes. Everything is new and interesting and it must be touched and explored.

New words: again, tickle, happy, I'm sorry, excuse me, wait, green bean, happy, c'mon, waterfall, lady, pasta, chicken, bear, zebra, monkey, come back, peek-a-boo, noise, shake, head, hide & seek, super, sister, frog
New signs: cold

- is really interested in the way things work -always trying to take it apart or figure out how it operates
- completely weaned and will fall asleep on his own as long as one of us is laying with him
- likes to fall asleep in complete silence, which he has told me on a few occasions when I try to sing lullabies. "No song," he says.
- loves spending time with his grandparents. Will indicate that he prefers Nana or Grandpa to feed him, read to him or do other activites. He also will follow them around and wants to see them right when he wakes up. If they leave the room he will get upset.
- plays on his own for longer intervals and will get very engrossed in coloring and driving his Hot Wheels cars on the floor
- will hum and try to sing along to songs on the radio
- is able to say his name, Samuel (sounds like Sa-mal), and correctly identifies himself in photos. He also identifies things as his, for example "Sa-mal's potty" and "Sa-mal's head."
- knows the meaning of gentle. He will try poking our eyes with his fingers but if we say to be gentle he will start softly rubbing them with his palm instead.
- tells us to "get up" in the morning when we are in bed
- uses "is" in sentences like when I yawn he will say "Ma-ma is sleepy"
- corrects his own bad behavior if he knows he is doing something he isnt supposed to be doing. For example, I will catch him in the process of climbing on something and at the same time he is saying "get (geet) down" to himself.
- he is able to open closed doors using the knob, although it takes some effort and a few tries.
- memorized some the words in his books and will repeat them back if we ask what it says
- is very affected if he thinks Allen or I am sad. He will get upset too and say "Ma-ma or Da-da sad" in a small little voice and a frown. He then gives kisses to make us feel better. He will also say "Baby sad" if he hears a crying baby or child when we are out. Sometimes we uses this to our advantage when disciplining as in "I dont want you to climb on that because if you fall and get hurt it will make Ma-ma very sad." He usually stops right away because he doesnt want us to be sad.
- will greet strangers in public. He just walks right up to them and says Hi! They of course think he is very adorable.
- initiates hugs
- often provides a commentary of what he is doing. "Ma-ma I shopping." (pushing his shopping cart full of play food). "I cook." (Turning a spoon in a bowl or playing with the measuring cups).
-loves when we put things on our head and make them fall off. He laughs hysterically and then wants them on his head too.
- says again when we are playing a game and he doesnt want to stop
- says a few words that sound like profanities. We try to avoid having him say sit, shirt and fork in public.
- will lay his head on the pillow, say "sleepy" and pretend to snore
- loves to wrestle and fight with dad especially when he body uslams him (gently) on the couch
- starting to pretend play with driving cars, cooking in the kitchen
- likes to collect things like Hot Wheels cars or rocks, then carry them around with him
- bends over at the waist and balances on his head, arms up, then I reach through his legs and wiggle his nose!
